The technical evolution of the subsonic airplane is traced from a curiosity at the beginning of World War I to the highly useful machine of today. Included are descriptions of significant aircraft which incorporated important technical innovations and served to shape the future course of aeronautical development, as well as aircraft which represented the state-of-art in a particular time frame or were much used or liked. The discussion is related primarily to aircraft configuration evolution...

Information is presented on the most important features of atmospheric radiation such as the quantitative characteristics of molecular absorption and scattering, spectral and angular distributions, and the three-dimensional structure of shortwave and longwave radiation fields. The model of the structure and composition of the atmosphere is described, and the fundamental optical characteristics of absorption and scattering of radiation by the atmosphere are examined. The principles are studied...

Transformation of data into knowledge through conceptual induction has been the focus of our research described in this paper. We have developed a Machine Learning System (MLS) to analyze the rocket engine simulation data. MLS can provide to its users fault analysis, characteristics, and conceptual descriptions of faults, and the relationships of attributes and sensors. All the results are critically important in identifying faults.

This book is an example of what may become the norm for history texts-an illustrated narrative accompanied by a CD-ROM. The text tells the story from the human side. It is based on reflections and quotes from the astronauts, cosmonauts, and team members who participated in the historic partnership. The main chapters give the perspectives of the seven U.S. astronauts living on Mir. The ''STS boxes'' share the Space Shuttle crews' experiences from the 11 Shuttle-Mir missions. The physicomechanical aspects of the emergence of the planets are discussed, based on the concept of accretion from solid bodies and particles which, together with the gases, made up the protoplanetary cloud enveloping the sun in the early phases of its development. The idea of accretion was extensively developed in Shmidt's theory and later in the physicochemical studies of meteorites carried out by Urey and others. The evolution of the gas-dust protoplanetary cloud and the formation of a...

First, exact definitions are supplied for the terms: position, velocity, energy, etc. (of the electron, for instance), such that they are valid also in quantum mechanics. Canonically conjugated variables are determined simultaneously only with a characteristic uncertainty. This uncertainty is the intrinsic reason for the occurrence of statistical relations in quantum mechanics. Mathematical formulation is made possible by the Dirac-Jordan theory. Beginning from the basic principles thus...

Slightly more than a half century ago the first tentative explorations into space learned that it was an environment in which the United States could conduct operations of benefit to the nation and its people. With the end of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union in the 1990s, advocates of an aggressive space exploration program face a problem similar to what they encountered at the end of the World War 2. Then, as now, makers of space policy have been wrestling with the...
